Reading the Arcs: results and Age Reached

What Reached, Nearly There, Not Reached, Gone Back and Not Set mean, and how Age Reached is worked out

This article explains how to read a child's Arcs after a profile: what each result means, how Age Reached is worked out, and how it compares with the child's actual age.

Video walkthrough

The Arcs

A profile's results are shown as seven colourful Arcs. Each Arc covers one area of development and is made up of topics. For example, the Wellbeing Arc includes Attachment, Confidence, Self-awareness, Social awareness and Self-regulation.

The scale across the top of each Arc shows age in months. The white bar shows the child's actual age today, so you can see at a glance where they are ahead or need support.

What each result means

Each topic is made up of statements, and each statement is linked to an age. When you assess a child, you give each statement one of these results:

  • Reached. The child shows this consistently.
  • Nearly There. The child is starting to show this but not yet consistently.
  • Not Reached. The child doesn't show this yet.
  • Gone Back. The child showed this before but doesn't show it now.
  • Not Set. The statement hasn't been assessed.

Age Reached

For each topic, Arc Pathway works out an Age Reached. This is the age, in months, of the highest statement the child has reached in that topic.

Only Reached counts. Nearly There, Not Reached, Gone Back and Not Set don't change Age Reached.

Comparing Age Reached with the child's age

Age Related Analysis compares each child's Age Reached at their most recent profile with their actual age in completed months, and places them in a band:

Band
Gap between Age Reached and actual age
Above
Age Reached is above the child's actual age
In Line
On track, or up to 2 months behind
Working Towards
3 to 5 months behind
Below Age Expected
6 months or more behind

Bands are shown for each topic, for each Arc, and for the child overall.

The Transition curriculum

If your setting uses the Transition curriculum, two extra bands apply. A child with an Age Reached of 66 months or more shows as Transition, and 72 months or more shows as Year 1.
